I haven't written for anyone (aside from the readers of this blog!), haven't been published in any magazines or newspapers, and haven't written any books. (I do, however, have a book verrrry slowly in work on a non-travel related topic. Hopefully someday that will come to fruition!) I don't have a background in journalism or editorial work, I don't have a network in this business, but I do have a lot of experience writing and I do love to travel. Is that all it takes to be a travel writer? I don't know but I'm sure gonna try. Heart is the half of it, right?
I love traveling, taking pictures, and writing about what I see. I'd love to have the opportunity to travel to a small village in Africa, for instance, live there for several weeks to a month, get to know the people, the culture, the lifestyle, and write about it and take pictures for the outsider. I want to detail the food, the daily life, the politics, the family life, and the interactions with other people in the area. I also want to put what I'm experiencing into the larger picture, maybe looking at it with a regional eye. I want to take pictures of all of this. And I want to show everything I'm experiencing to everyone else.
I don't want to travel nonstop; I want to have a home base and travel for a couple of weeks at a time. People often ask me if I want to move elsewhere. I don't think I do. I'd much rather live where I am and go exploring from here. I can't picture living that far from my family for such a long time. Many people seem quite content traveling alone, but I'm not one of them. I love seeing sites and sharing moments with family and friends around me. I love being able to turn to someone and say, "Hey, did you see that?" Or "Wow, look!" I think if I'm not traveling with someone, able to say those things to my traveling companion next to me, it makes me sad. I want to share what I'm seeing. I think that's part of the appeal of writing for Wide Lanes. So I hope you enjoy reading as much as I enjoy seeing!
